Ask about apprenticeships

The questions that make an earn-and-learn route easier to understand.

Hands-on trade skills and workshop materials

Understand the arrangement

Ask who employs the apprentice, who provides the training and how classroom learning fits around work. Different sponsors organise these elements differently. The name of the occupation alone does not tell you what a particular programme involves.

Discuss the practical week

Transport, working hours, equipment and study time all affect whether a route fits a person’s circumstances. Ask about costs and support as well as any pay information. Confirm details directly with the programme rather than relying on a general description.

Ask how progress works

Find out how learning is reviewed, what qualifications or credentials are involved and who supports a learner when they encounter a problem. The quality of the explanation can help you understand whether the programme provides the structure you need.
